Covid really did a number on us. But it did a bigger one on the pet industry. Because of the lockdown and people staying and working from home, many families ended up getting dogs, cats, bunnies and hamsters for companionship. But most of them did not account for the lockdown being lifted and getting called back to work.
Over the last year, thousands of pets were let go by their guardians and backyard breeders as strays or surrendered to shelters. Thousands of dogs and cats are being euthanized due to lack of funding, space, and resources. Shelter staff and Rescue workers have been working non-stop to help re-home these pets and are facing burn-out. And the problem only seems to worsen as each day goes by.
The Ahimsa Store, though a small endeavor, hopes to lend a hand to the Shelters, Rescues and any organization, group or person who is trying to be part of the solution to this ever-increasing problem.
The Ahimsa Store’s concept is simple. We take items donated by the community and sell them to raise money for the shelter animals. We use the Nextdoor app to request for and collect donations and use Nextdoor, Facebook Markeplace and word-of-mouth to sell the items. The items we have on sale are always priced lower than items of the same category on the Marketplace to sell them quickly to ensure that we are continually raising money.
